Five checks when an image upload fails

If a compressed photo still will not upload, read the error first. A file size limit, a dimension requirement and an unsupported format each need a different fix.

Features checked ·

Renaming a file to .jpg does not convert it. Check the saved output’s size, dimensions and actual format, then select that output again on the upload page.

1. Check the size unit and total

In this tool, 200 KB means 200,000 bytes. Operating systems and destination websites can use different units or rounding. If a file is rejected near a boundary, choose a slightly lower target to leave room.

Batch targets apply to each image. A website may also limit the combined size of all attachments, so check the total separately.

2. Check pixel dimensions separately

KB measures stored data; pixels describe an image’s width and height. A smaller file can still fail a width or height requirement.

In single-photo mode, use Crop and rotate to choose an area, then set one dimension in size and format settings. The other dimension follows the crop’s proportions; small images are not enlarged. Check both saved dimensions. Requirements for face placement and background color still need a separate check.

3. Check the actual image format

Changing a HEIC filename to .jpg does not turn it into JPEG. Export a JPG or PNG copy from an app that supports the original format. This site’s photo tools support JPG and still PNG.

Choose PNG when transparency matters. JPG output fills transparent areas with white.

4. Select the downloaded output

Open the downloaded image first, then select that file in the destination’s upload dialog. If you downloaded a ZIP, extract it before choosing individual photos. Failed batch items are not included in the ZIP.

5. Check the destination’s instructions

Even when size, dimensions and format match, filename rules, expired login sessions, attachment limits or a website outage can prevent submission. Follow the destination’s current instructions and error messages. Successful processing here does not guarantee acceptance elsewhere.

Keep your original and change one setting at a time when retrying. This makes it easier to identify which requirement caused the problem.
