    Image compression: common questions

    How do I reduce an image below 100KB, 200KB, 500KB or 1MB?

Choose a JPG (JPEG), PNG, WebP or HEIC image, select a size limit, then click Compress image. For a 50KB limit, enter 50 in the custom limit field. You can also enter a whole number from 10 to 20,000KB. A successful result will not exceed the selected byte limit: 100KB means no more than 100,000 bytes. If the image cannot fit within the tool’s limits, an error message is shown.

How many KB should I enter to reduce an image below 1MB?

Choose the 1MB button or enter 1000 in the custom limit field. This tool uses 1,000 bytes per KB, so a 1MB target means no more than 1,000KB, or 1,000,000 bytes. After compression, check the result’s actual file size and pixel dimensions.

What is the difference between pixel dimensions and file size in KB?

Pixels describe image dimensions; KB describes file size. In single mode, Crop / rotate lets you choose the area and orientation. A fixed width or height keeps that area’s proportions. If the exact size cannot meet your KB target, we show an error instead of shrinking it further. Enlargement is not supported.

Is it free? Do I need an account or an app?

Choosing an image, compressing it and downloading the result are all free. No account or app installation is needed. Your browser must support JavaScript and image processing.

Is my image stored on a server?

Your selected image is processed in this browser. We do not upload it or keep it in site storage. The original file is not changed. Downloaded files are saved on the device you choose. Saving settings stores only up to 5 KB, size and format combinations in this browser. You can remove them from the saved list.

Only with your analytics consent, Google Analytics 4 (GA4) measures referral sources, page views, interface language, image selection, compression success or failure, and download clicks. We do not send your image, filename, image contents, or entered size. Google may process analytics cookie identifiers and connection information such as browser, device, and approximate region. Ad personalization and Google signals are disabled. Your choice is remembered for six months, and analytics cookies for up to 180 days. You can decline or withdraw consent at any time through ‘Analytics settings’ in the footer. All photo features work without consent. See the Google Privacy Policy.

Loading the website requires a network connection. Our hosting provider, Cloudflare, may process connection information such as your IP address to deliver and protect the site. This is separate from processing your selected image. See the Cloudflare Privacy Policy.

On your first visit to the default address, the site uses the country estimated from your IP address to choose a language. To remember your manual choice, only its language code is saved in this browser’s local storage and a cookie (for one year), so future visits to the default address can open in that language. A URL that specifies a language always takes priority. Your image and filename are not sent during this process. You can change the language at any time in the language menu.

Will the quality or pixel dimensions change?

Auto size adjusts JPG/WebP quality first, then reduces dimensions if needed. PNG reduces pixel dimensions instead of using a quality setting. Custom dimensions stay fixed; you get an error if the KB limit cannot be met. Check text, faces and the recipient’s requirements.

Which formats are supported? Can I use PNG?

Supports JPG, JPEG and still PNG, WebP and single-photo HEIC. Up to 10 files, 20MB (20,000,000 bytes) and 24MP per file, 100MB total. APNG, animated WebP, GIF, HEIC sequences, multi-photo HEIC and PDF are unsupported. Large photos may exceed device memory.

Auto format converts PNG above the limit to JPG with a white background. WebP input stays WebP. Choose PNG or WebP output to keep transparency. If the target cannot be met at your fixed dimensions, an error is shown. HEIC supports files containing one still photo. Auto output is JPG; PNG and WebP are also available. The decoder loads on your first HEIC selection, which may take a moment. HDR and camera metadata are not retained; check the result’s colors and orientation.

What happens to smaller originals and photo metadata?

If the file is already under the target and no crop, rotation, size or format change is needed, we return the original file, including its metadata, which may contain location information. Editing or conversion creates a new file. Do not use this tool as a location-data remover. The original on your device stays unchanged.

Does meeting the size limit guarantee acceptance?

This tool reduces file size. Check your destination’s other requirements, such as pixel dimensions, format, face or background rules, and whether the file is accepted. Targets use 1,000 bytes per KB. A result that exceeds the target is not shown as a success.
